mail box
As the holidays approach, so does the deadline to mail packages to family and friends. Wichita customers will bring nearly 10 million pieces of mail to local post offices during this holiday season.
Here are some tips to make sure your packages make it to their destinations on time and in one piece:
Out of the millions of items that will pass through the Wichita post office, close to 700,000 will be cancelled because of incorrect labeling. To prevent this from happening to your packages, postal officials say to make sure you print the delivery and return address neatly.
Use a sturdy container to protect delicate items, and leave room for cushioning. Always use tape designed for shipping, like pressure sensitive tape.
Don't put postage on a package before you take to be mailed. If a package weighs more than one pound the post office will have to issue a special stamp.
For two to three day guaranteed shipping, items must be mailed by December 20th. Expect to pay between $24 and $36 for this service. Three to five day express shipping items must be mailed by December 17th. Pricing starts around $15. Four to six day priority packages need to be mailed by December 16th. It will cost $4 to $7.
Officials expect the peak-mailing day to be December 16th. The peak delivery day will be December 18th. To avoid long lines at the post office mail your items early.
