Many designer drugs like Viagra and Prozac have been available online with a prescription for some time. Now, one of the most dangerous and addictive prescription drugs is just a mouse click away from anyone with the money to buy it.
Codeine is a prescription drug made from the same plant as heroine. It is so addictive pharmacists have to keep it under the tightest control. Despite the dangers, one website offers to sell pure codeine to anyone, even if they do not have a prescription.
KAKE On Your Side wanted to see how easy was for someone obtain codeine online. We put in an order and sent the company $78. A week later we received by mail forty tablets of the strongest codeine manufactured. It is illegal to sell, have or hold in the United States without a prescription.
Comcare councilor Richard Moore treats drug addicts. He says he was shocked to learn that drugs like codeine are available online because they are so dangerous.
KAKE On Your Side sent the company questions asking why they sell codeine to people without prescriptions. The company did not respond.
We also contacted the Kansas Attorney General's office. A spokesman says a Kansas Supreme Court ruling makes it difficult to stop Internet drug trafficking. Other officials say the problem is even harder to stop because the company that sold us the drug is based overseas.
After completing our investigation we turned the codeine over to local law enforcement authorities.
