A Wichita magnet school is among five schools in Kansas to receive the No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Award. The Buckner Performing Arts Magnet school was named to the distinguished list, which includes 287 schools nationwide.
The No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools award distinguishes and honors schools for helping students achieve at very high levels and for making significant progress in closing the achievement gap.
The other Kansas schools recognized include Morris Hill Elementary School, USD 475 Geary County; Eisenhower Elementary School, USD 475 Geary County; Lincoln Elementary School, USD 431 Hoisington; and Herington Elementary School, USD 487 Herington.
Under No Child Left Behind, schools must make Adequate Yearly Progress, or AYP, in reading and language arts and mathematics. Each state—not the federal government—sets its own academic standards and benchmark goals.
Those selected will be honored at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on November 12-13.
