Winfield, Kan. -- All across the state, people who care about history love to display it, talk about it, collect it and learn from it. But preserving communities past is always difficult.
Small museums overseen by historical societies struggle all across the state. In Winfield, my hometown, a dedicated museum board oversees a fascinating cache of local history. But, many residents still haven’t visited, and that’s too bad, because among the history, you’ll meet dedicated people like Shawn Marie Stover the museum’s part time director and only employee.
It’s Winfield’s old Bryant School that instead of holding students is holding a communities history.
Historians would probably agree with Roman philosopher Cicero – He said: "To remain ignorant of things that happened before you were born is to remain a child."
So we celebrate those like Shawn Marie and the volunteers whose enthusiasm for the past would make Cicero proud.
