Piedmont, Kan. -- It’s the small Kansas towns that are disappearing that keep drawing me to them.
Take Piedmont, Kansas for example: I was there when the snow hadn't yet met the sun, but I did meet Lila.
She runs the only restaurant in town. She also runs the only business in town.
Lila Wunderlick says, “It’s just a homey place. And we try to keep it that way. And I like to cook too. I don’t know how good it is, but they eat it.”
“The food is wonderful. Tuesday and Saturday, Lila has fried chicken. And it is to ‘die’ for.” says regular Cindy Knopps.
“Yeah, I hope they keep coming….but they probably will.”
In Piedmont, there are still a couple of churches left, a Post Office, and a school that is no more.
“It’s just going away.”
But it’s Lila’s place that survives.
She’s been here over 50 years…and her 80th Birthday is days away.
