On Hatteberg’s People, I’ve been around photography all my life. It has been my career. That’s why when I see young talent, I get pretty excited. What I never expected though, was to see that talent at eight years of age. Thomas Harmon is a talented young photographer from Otis, Kansas, who started his career when he was two.
This is Thomas Harmon --- Photographer --- age 8. And this is his world.
“This is my baby brother Ren—and this is Moscow (his horse).
He lives in a rural area not far from Otis, Kansas. Everywhere you look there are picture possibilities and Thomas is taking advantage of each one.
“You get to squat down, you get to lay down, you get messy, you get to do anything you want. It’s just so fun.”
“I’m proud of him, because there is a lot of them (pictures) I wish I had taken as good a picture as him.”
As amazing as it sounds he began taking pictures when he was two years old. He had a good teacher. His mom, Rachel Harmon--
“See how I’m in focus.”
Who is also a photographer and has her own small video production company.
“And now I’m going to roll it back into focus, and that would be kind of a special effect. You can use a slower shutter speed when you focus.”
“I need a tripod.”
“Yeah, you will.”
Tripod on not, eight-year old Thomas has a flair for photography ---
“I’m looking for interest, the rule of thirds, just great pictures.”
Just take a look at some of these images—many of them award winners.
“When I was one years old, my mom said – next year you can have a camera.”
“His perspective on things is totally different than adults. You know, he’s young and the whole world is new to him. So it’s really interesting to see how he views the world.”
His mom Rachel has put some of his images in books, and over the kitchen table, these extraordinary images are full of memories.
“But what about this one?”
“It got ‘first’ in the Iowa State Fair.”
“He does shoot his own pictures; I mean I go to great lengths to document that he does shoot his own pictures.”
“I think he just picked it up and hearing it over and over.”
“I don’t care about the awards; I just care about taking pictures.”
Even though Thomas doesn’t do it for the awards – he gets them anyway. He has won at state fairs, even in a national magazine contest. So take a look at his pictures --- remember, this is an 8 year old photographer.

Larry's note: His mother Rachel also teaches photography and apparently Thomas is a good student. I did ask him what he wants to be when he grows up and he replied, "Zookeeper".
