A stay in the hospital caused Nick Anderson to rethink his retirement. With a mechanical engineering degree and a degree in physics, he'd worked as a Section Chief for Air Worthiness at Cessna.

Now, Nick is a nurse.

"My name is Nick. I'm your nurse this evening."

At 63, Nick Anderson began a new career. He became a nurse at Via Christa St. Joseph. When others are heading to retirement, Nick said no to that and yes to nursing.

"Some of the people I knew at Cessna while I was working there said why you are crazy. And you are too old to do that and that it's a woman's job. You know I heard all of those kinds of things."

Toward the end of his career at Cessna he had an illness that put him in the hospital. The care by the nursing staff was what convinced him to get his nursing degree.

"Well, the nurses were very caring, it was very obvious that they cared about the well-being of the patients that they had."

"So it impressed me that these people, as a group, really were that way."

It took him several years of study to receive his nursing degree, and now at 66 he couldn't be happier.

"I now want to be that hands on…on-line person that impressed me when I was in the hospital. And for as long as I have left in my career, I can probably do that."

"I've always been somewhat of a people person and advocated for the people in the business all my life. I guess it must be in my nature."

Nick works the late-night shift at Via Christi St. Joseph. He says retirement just didn't suit him - helping people does.
