Robert Edge of Galena, Kansas is doing exactly what he wants to do. His work is unusual, and his clientele live in the past. For him, that's just fine.
"It's like being on the main street of a carnival you might say. You see all sorts of things. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else other than right here."
In a small shop on the corner of Galena's main street, the clutter of Robert Edge's world is only in the minds of his visitors.
"But I don't mind working in this…well, we'll say 'mess'. It's easy to say that word."
Robert makes knives, all kinds of knives.
"This will become two knives, hunting knives, these stems up here will become one, two, three, four steak knives."
"There is not a lot of people making primitive things."
They are made for re-enactors who enjoy living, and portraying the 1800's. But they are also purchased by collectors and deer hunters.
"This one is a hunting knife and the next one they like is a skinning knife. But one knife usually sells the next knife. I don't have any complaints. No complaints. As a matter of fact, I kind of enjoy this every day. I laugh out loud sometimes and somebody says, what are you laughing at and I say…I'm enjoying this. I really like it."
Around his eclectic shop piles of stuff await his creative hand. Over here…piles of cowhide will soon become pants.
"Each day is a new challenge."
Then there is the series knife. The Bowie knife…made famous by frontiersman Jim Bowie.
"This is a classic Bowie knife in the time period of 1837-1840's. I love to build them. I don't have any regrets when I'm finished with one of them.
And out back….those tomahawks you've been seeing…he makes those too.
"It's hard to get people, a crowd of people to come into a store like this, but if they did…they would enjoy it too."
