Residents in the Wichita area woke up to some of Mother Nature’s most impressive weather events this week. A lot of emails from viewers are asking “What is hoarfrost?” Good question.

Hoarfrost is also known as radiation frost and refers to white ice crystals that are loosely deposited on the ground or exposed objects. This happens when the object becomes colder than the surrounding air.

The word “hoar” means to gray with age and hoarfrost turns everything white or gray.
