A viewer wants to know, “If you are born on an airplane, where is your official place of birth?” Good question.

After putting in a call to the Kansas Department of Vital Statistics to ask this question, their response was, “Good question.”

Birth documentation can differ from state to state, even from county to county.

The viewer who asked the question says they were born in a car, and the birth certificate gives the location of the interstate where the birth took place.

But if a baby is born on an airplane, is the official place of birth the airspace of the state or country where the plane is flying at the time of birth? Is it where the plane lands or where it took off?

According to the Kansas department of vital statistics, the county and city of birth would be the county and city where the child is first removed from the plane. So, if you are born over Mississippi and land in Orlando, Orlando is your place of birth if your mother is a Kansas resident.

Also, the name and address of the airport where the baby is first removed from the plane is listed as the physical location of birth.
