Gary wants to know more about the spire installed on Wichita's Downtown Arena.

"What's so great about this "spire"? Why did it have to come from New York?" he asks.

Good question.

Wichita's new Intrust Bank Arena is on track to open early next year. The building has already redefined the city's skyline. A few weeks ago, a spire was installed on the south side.

A spire is defined as a tapering conical or pyramidal structure on top of a building. The word spire is a mix of the words spear and spirit. It's a symbol of power and strength. It also reaches up toward the sky, which is why spires are common on many churches.

Assistant Sedgwick County Manager Ron Holt says that the spire is simply part of the design, an architectural feature that ties in well with the post rock.

Holt says it came from New York because that's where it was manufactured. There aren't a lot of spire shops in Kansas.
