The college basketball season started last week and the Jayhawks are defending their National Championship.
How many national basketball championship titles does KU have? Good question.
The other night on KAKE News, Sports Director Alan Shope said, "The Jayhawks raise their fifth National Championship banner in Allen Fieldhouse."
Many only count three, in 1952, 1988 and 2008. Former OTL host Dave Phillips had the answer to that question.
"Prior to the BCS, the polls determined who was the National Champ, and prior to the NCAA tournament which began in 1939, same thing. A group called the Helms Foundation voted and in '22 and '23, they said KU was number one and the National Champ," Phillips said.
It's a bit confusion, because there wasn't a "National Championship Game."
But, according to Dave Phillips, in 1922, that game really was Kansas and Missouri. They both played in the Missouri Valley Conference and they each lost once. But since KU won the second game, at the end of the year, the pollsters said, 'Well, KU won the second game so they get to be National Champs.'
