Viewers Monty and Vickie Williams of Cheney want to help the environment by recycling. They want to know if it's necessary to wash out the plastic peanut butter jar before putting it in the recycling bin. Good question.
If you have ever tried to clean out the inside of a peanut butter jar or mayonnaise jar, you know it can be a time-consuming mess.
Most people who recycle plastic and glass know that the item must be cleaned before it can be put in the green-bin. But, in some states, you don't have to clean the jar.
So, what about Kansas?
A phone call to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment answered their question. Yes, you must clean the jar before recycling it.
There are many reasons for this rule. First, there are sanitation problems with rats and other vermin. Second, some recycling facilities do not rinse glass and plastic before processing.
It is definitely a mess to clean the jar, but the recycling folks will thank you for the extra effort. Try filling the jar with soapy water and leaving it overnight. The peanut butter will let go of the sides and crevices much more easily.
