Millions and millions of sandbags have been used to help fight the recent flooding in the midwest.

Viewer Jay Reed wants to know, "What happens to all of those sandbags when the flood is over." Good question.

After some "digging", I found that this question has been asked many times, and many different answers are posted on the internet by a variety of sources.

Sometimes, the bags are stored away for "another rainy day" and reused when another flood washes into town. Other times, the bags are emptied and the sand is used in road projects and construction.

A big factor in the bags' post-flood future is if the bag came in contact with flood water. In some cases, those bags are simply disposed of at a landfill. Otherwise, the bags are dried and reused.

Floodwaters can contain mild hazards, so the sand in the bags is not used for sandboxes in playgrounds or in other situations where the sand could come in contact with people.
