Zombie Infestation Ahead

When going for a jog, sometimes it can be hard to find motivation to keep going. But a 5k this weekend will have you running for your life.

In this race, runners will be climbing over haybales, and running through sand - all while being chased by zombies.

Races come in many forms.

"There's the color run, the glow run, the gladiator dash," said Meritrust Credit Union VP of Marketing Jamie Taulbee.

But this weekend, a new 5k concept will have participants running for their lives.

"They're going to have to try to avoid the zombies so they're going to have to be twisting and turning," said Executive Director of Consumer Credit Counseling Jeff Witherspoon. "And three miles is a long way and there's obstacles, and these obstacles aren't easy ."

Taking place at Tanganyika Wildlife Park, the first annual Wichita Zombie Run is equipped with plenty of ambiance. Zombies will have a number of spots to hide, providing an unexpected surprise at every turn.

"It's off the beaten path. The runners get to run through a cemetery, by a barn and a little windy road," Taulbee said. "So it has the whole ambiance of Halloween and zombies, and Children of the Corn."

The event isn't just fun, but it also supports the local organization, Consumer Credit Counseling Services.

"We're a local non-profit agency that helps people that are in financial difficulty," Witherspoon said. "And we're just like most non-profits with budget cuts"

"The idea there is if there's a zombie apocolypse tonight, it's not like you have a map to get you through it," said Assistant Director of the Tangynika Wildlife Park Matt Fouts.

Runners will be wearing a belt with three flags attached to it, and the course takes runners down narrow paths, zombie infested fields and even through an old barn.

"The objective is to get through the race with at least one flag," Witherspoon said.

But with 450 volunteer zombies after them, that could be difficult.

"Their only job is to take the flags, or eat the brains of the runners," Taulbee said.

Event organizers give one piece of advice: Expect the unexpected.

"Climbing, jumping, crawling, over, under, haybales, zombies - Everything that you could possibly think of in an apocalypse is going to be here," Taulbee said.

"Just like a haunted house, they're basically just going to start the race and then three miles twists and turns and a lot of unknowns," Fouts said.

If you think you can outrun the zombies, you can still sign up. You'll just need to register before the race.
