WICHITA, Kan. - No one seems to speak of a "war on Valentine's Day," the way some describe Christmas. But the day has opponents -- including some Christian church groups.
Several church associations preach against Valentine's Day, saying it has non-Biblical pagan roots dating from the Roman Lupercalia festival. One group even published an article (see our link) suggesting any display of love on February 14 will be wrong.
Those groups likely would admit they're in a minority. One website notes people in the U.S. exchange 180 million Valentine cards each year, spending an average $116.21 per person.
