Two men -- a convicted murderer and another inmate -- who broke out of the Ottawa County Jail early Wednesday morning are still on the run today.

The criminals still at large are 22-year-old Santos Carrera-Morales and 22-year-old Eric James. Carrera-Morales was convicted of first degree murder in connection with two Wichita killings in 2007.

Carrera-Morales and James were part of a group of four men who escaped from the Ottawa County Jail in Minneapolis, about 25 miles north of Salina, early Wednesday.

Two of the escapees are back in custody. One was caught quickly after the escape. Drew Wade, 21, traveled by minivan to North Platte, Neb., about 240 miles away. Authorities say he walked into a Walmart there and asked the store's manager to call police.

UPDATE: Wednesday, April 18, 2012

One of the inmates who escaped from the Ottawa County jail has been captured.

Drew Wade was captured in North Platte, Nebraska at approximately 5:30 p.m. according to the Kansas Department of Corrections. Two inmates, Santos Carrera and Eric James, remain at large. They are considered armed and dangerous.

Four inmates escaped from a Kansas county jail after overpowering two guards, officials said.

It happened at the Ottawa County Jail in Minneapolis just before 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Keith Coleman, Ottawa County Sheriff, said the inmates distracted the guards by requesting for help by saying they had a water line leak in their cell. The men then threatened the 911 dispatcher, gained entry to the main control room, opened up all of the cells and escaped out the front door. The entire facility was unsecured, Coleman said.

Coleman said he captured one of the inmates at a gas station shortly after their escape. Three other escapees stole residents’ vehicles to drive away from the area. Authorities are looking for a 2002 Nissan Altima, gold in color, with a license plate of 649-CIC, and a 2005 Chevrolet Venture, tan in color, with a license plate of 854-DZQ in connection to their escape.

One of the escapees, Santos Carrera-Morales, 22, is a convicted murderer from Wichita. He was tried as an adult and convicted in a double-shooting that killed Julio Morales and Adrian Vega in 2007. Coleman said Carrera-Morales was staying at the county jail because of a KDOC contract.

The Associated Press reports Department of Corrections official Jeremy Barclay says the agency has criteria that county jails must meet before signing contracts to house state prison inmates. As of Friday, there were 87 inmates being housed in county jails.

Barclay says the state prison system is facing overcrowding and that officials are asking legislators for funds to expand bed space at Ellsworth.

Schools in Minneapolis were closed as authorities search for the inmates. Superintendent Larry Combs said he had reservations of operating under a full lockdown all day.

Coleman said deputies are pulling the inmates’ phone records and mail to see if they had pre-planned this brazen escape.

Anyone with information on their whereabouts can call the Ellsworth Correctional Facility at (785) 472-5501, or the Kansas Bureau of Investigation 1-800-572-7463.

UPDATE: Wednesday, April 18, 2012

North Ottawa County schools are closed for the day after four people broke out of the county jail in Minneapolis, early Wednesday morning.

Superintendent Larry Combs says he initially called a two-hour delay after hearing of the escapes, then called classes off completely after being told the schools would have to be on full lockdown.

According to the KDOC website, Santos Carrera-Morales, Drew Wade, and Eric James, 22 broke out of the jail around 4:45 a.m. Wednesday. Another suspect also escaped, but has since been caught.

Carrera-Morales, 22, is described as hispanic man about 5'9" tall, 169 lbs., with black hair and brown eyes.

Wade, 21, is a white man about 176 lbs., with blue eyes, a shaved head and wears glasses. He has two tattoos, one on his upper left arm that says "3" another on his left hand that says "hate."

James, 22, is a black man with black hair, brown eyes weighing about 180 pounds. He has two tattoos, one on his left arm that says "Tierra" and another on his lower right arm that says "Cher." He also has a one-inch scar on his right hand.

Carrera-Morales was tried as an adult and convicted in a double-shooting that killed Julio Morales and Adrian Vega in 2007.

Authorities are looking for a 2002 Nissan Altima, gold in color, with a license plate of 649-CIC, and a 2005 Chevrolet Venture, tan in color, with a license plate of 854-DZQ in connection to their escape.
