Relay for Life is an event established by the American Cancer Society to raise money to fight the disease...
But to make the event a success, they depend on donations...
And one of their biggest contributors is from right here in kakeland.
A mother/daughter duo located in Garden Plain were the number one fundraisers in the region for relay for life last year...
Raising thirty eight thousand dollars.
This year, they're at it again...
Making money...
By baking bierocks.
"We're good at baking, we're not good at carwashes, and golf tournaments and stuff like that, we can bake," said baker Terry Bugner.
So that's just what this mother/daughter duo has done...
Baking pigs in a blanket, cinnamon rolls...
"She puts mashed potatoes in the cinnamon rolls... shhh," Bugner said.
And mostly bierocks to raise money for relay for life.
"We made 16,857 this year," Bugner said,
An incredible number, for a fundraiser that relies strictly on word of mouth.
"I was in a grocery line one time and a friend of mine walked up and said well what are you guys doing this weekend, i said well we're baking bierocks, and the lady that was checking me out ended up ordering bierocks, that's kind of how it starts, i had to deliver to Walmart," Bugner said.
But to fill their large number of orders, they don't have the luxury of a commercial kitchen to do their baking in...
No, they've made those thousands of bierocks, right here in this garage.
"We can bake 48 at a time, put them on pans of 8, and bake them," Bugner said.
This is no easy task...
The pair starts baking in october, and don't finish until may.
They make seventy pounds of homemade bread, eighty pounds of hamburger, and chop seven heads of cabbage at a time...
A process that can take up to six hours.
"It's an every day deal, every weekend deal, and i mean it takes a big chunk of time, but it is just really hard work, it's turned into a little job," Bugner said.
Unfortunately, it's this time committment that's got them hanging up their baking mitts after this year.
"It's kind of a shame that we're going to give it up, but this body can't do it no more," baker Vera Rausch said.
"It's a good feeling, it is, and we hope we help somebody, i said if all those bierocks would save somebody's life, i'd be happy," Rausch said.
This year, team Bierock Bunch has raised about thirty thousand dollars.
but, Terry, Vera, and their team aren't the only ones getting involved in Relay for Life...
Kake's very own Deb Farris and Lily Wu will be mc-ing a couple of the events around town Friday night.
