Last time we talked about keeping your temper at work.
Kelly Eggers with the website Fins Sales and Marketing has ten tips on how to stay cool when tension is running high. I passed along the first 5 of her pointers on how to prevent getting steamed. Today we'll pass along the 2nd batch of tips.
6. Be assertive, not aggresive
You don't always have time to let the anger subside. Try using assertive, as opposed to aggresive language and mannerisms to express your feelings. Instead of saying you are such a jerk because you did "x", try saying when you did "x", it made me feel "y".
7. Consider your reputation
Regardless of of the target of your blowout, word will travel.
You may be right and you may get your point across, but if you damage the relationship with your fellow employee, you will lose in the long run.
8. Sleep on it
Consider the 24-hour rule. Write down your feelings, then wait 24 hours and look at what you've written. It's amazing what impact a good night's rest has on your attitude.
9. Focus on the actual problem
When you're ready to unleash on a colleague, consider first if the person is the problem or if there is an underlying issue. Sometimes rules or regulations are not in place or were not followed. So look at the big picture, not just the person you're upset with.
10. Think about the seven dwarves
Some experts say distracting yourself can help you redirect your feelings. It doesn't have to be complex. Thinking of an old nursery rhyme or the names of the seven dwarfs can help you concentrate on something else for a few minutes, which can be enough to help you return to the problem with a clear frame of mind.
