Why pay for something when you can get it for free?
If you do your research, you can stretch your dollars further. Here are some tips:
1. Get Wi-Fi on the road
Many public libraries offer free Wi-Fi, along with some restaurant and coffee shop chains. Some cities have hot spots where you can log on from certain locations. Wi-Fi snipping apps can help find the hot spots.
2. Stock your e-reader
There are more than 1 million book titles in the public domain. The copyrights have expired so you can download them for free.
3. Get more from your cable provider
Ask for the retention department and tell the person who answers you're ready to defect to satellite. The company could offer a lower rate or at least a few perks.
4. Look into company perks
If you work for a large employer check with the Human Resources department. Many companies offer wellness programs, free quit-smoking programs, even financial planning. You may be able to get discount tickets to major events.
5. Military benefits
If you are a vet or in the National Guard you may be eligible for the GI bill or other education benefits. There are mental health services through the VA. There is financial planning help and you may qualify for extra income to cover nursing home care or to pay an aide.
