One person is dead following a crash in south Wichita.

The crash happened at about 11:20 Thursday night near the intersection of Bayley and St. Francis.

Sedgwick County Sheriff's officials say deputies tried to stop a car after it failed to dim its lights near the intersection of Harry and Hydraulic. When the vehicle failed to stop deputies began a short chase, lasting only about thirty seconds.

The driver sped into a neighborhood and officials called off the pursuit for safety reasons. However, they did continue looking for the vehicle in the area. That's when witnesses reported seeing the car heading to Bayley and St. Francis.

When police arrived in that area they found the driver had crashed his car and was pronounced dead at the scene. No other cars were involved in the accident.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is now investigating the crash, which is a standard procedure.

The driver has been identified as 36-year-old Stephen Long of Wichita.
