A Quarter of TSA Employees Are Veterans

Stay up-to-date with KAKE News:

Veterans Day is coming up this weekend.
It's a chance to pause and say thank you for serving.
One quarter of TSA's workforce is comprised of veterans...
Providing them the opportunity to continue to serve and protect, outside of military duty.

Harvey Herrman has a military mindset.
"Almost forty years ago is when I went into the service," Herrman said.

At Mid-Continent Airport, he found a natural fit for his background as a TSA agent.
"Everybody that works here takes their job very seriously," Herrman said. "I am not a military here, I am a civilian, but it very much carries over."

Felice Sotelo, who spent four years active duty in the Airforce Security Forces, has also been drawn to TSA
.
"It's run similar to the military, so I'm familiar with it that way," Sotelo said.

Part of the attraction to the job was the familiarity it offered.
The strict compliance rules that TSA must follow resemble the structure of military life.

"Because of the way the guidelines are and how everything is, it is somewhat like the military, like I recall," Herrman said.

But it was also the comraderie that appealed to both Felice and Harvey.
They're two of many vets working at Mid-Continent.

"Here locally within the state there's about twenty five percent of our workforce out of about 165," said Kansas Federal Security Director Keith Osborn.

That number is mirrored nationally, with veterans making up one quarter of the fifty-thousand nationwide TSA employees.

"In the hiring process, veterans do get a little bit of preference," Osborn said.

It's a way to continue their service, outside of the armed forces.

"Although you're not in the military anymore, it gives you a way to help protect America's freedom," Sotelo said.

TSA also provides services for veteran and active duty passengers.
They participate in both the Pre-check Program and the Wounded Warrior Program with the aim to make air travel easier for service members.

Also, TSA is encouraging their employed veterans to wear their medals leading up to veterans day.
If you see a tsa officer this weekend displaying their military decorations, make sure to tell them thank you.
