Callie Peterson
Hatteberg's People
Reporter: Larry Hatteberg

August 25, 2002--She hails from the Flint Hills and Callie Peterson doesn't want to be anywhere else.  That's why an all-female rodeo appealed to her. They have been gaining in popularity all over the country so she and others started one in Kansas  to share their love of the prairie and the lifestyle it brings . "It's amazing.  You just want to stay out there.  It's perfect."

Her life is on the range in Marion County.  "There is nothing better."

In Hillsboro, at the Marion County Fair this year things were a little different.  It was an all female rodeo and Callie helped organize it.

"I think people are so curious.  Wow, can women really do all that?  But then I just like to laugh and say, you better be there and watch!"

Callie says rodeos have been around for years, but this type of rodeo hasn't.  It's new.  "I am overwhelmed with the turnout.  It's fabulous.  There are a lot of good teams here tonight."

There are four timed competitions derived from common chores most of the contestants perform daily on their ranches.   Callie's group was the "Rafter  P Ranch Rodeo Team."

One of the events  is trailer loading.   Contestants have to sort out an animal, load it in a trailer and do it in a specified amount of time.  And Callie's team did just that.

As the sun set over the Hillsboro fairgrounds, the calf branding event became Callie's biggest challenge.  "I wouldn't say I get nervous, it's more of a adrenalin rush.  I just want to get out there and do it.  You just want to grab into something and hang on tight so you can stay in the game.  They (the people watching the rodeo) want to see the dirt and the hard luck and the bumps.  If everything goes good it gets kind of boring.  They want to see the wild stuff."
For Callie Peterson, every day is a rodeo when you live on the Kansas prairie.  "I love it very much.  I wouldn't trade it.  I wish everyone would get a chance to see that perfection."
