Marty Capron
December 17, 2006--Some people just ‘know’ what they were put on this earth to do. Marty Capron of Oxford is one of those fortunate individuals.

“It’s just real flowing. You know, the color, the texture, and the way they move and everything. It’s really an all-around beauty. I’ve raised them from babies of course, so they are a lot like kids.”
Marty Capron isn’t the guy next door. Marty’s life is that of a naturalist…studying reptiles and creating art from their beauty.

“Sometimes it seems like a difficult way to make a living, but I think it has worked out real well now. It has definitely where I’m supposed to going.”

Marty is one of those unique men who has always known who he is and what he wants to do.

“I could never see myself working at a desk job or much of anything else. It really helps you relax when you are outside and looking at these things in interesting places.”

“This is an Australian blue-tongued skink. It’s so beautiful and all of these things so interesting that it makes a lot more sense to me than video games and a lot of other things people do.”

This was Marty back in 1977 when he was still in high school. His passion for reptiles clearly visible.

“I’ve handled them all my life. I grew up with them.”

Now, nearly 30 years later throughout his home, he is still passionate about all kinds of reptiles like this corn snake, or these turtles that winter in his back porch…or this giant lizard that keeps a watchful eye on visitors – whatever the animal – Marty makes them come alive through his art…like these rattlesnakes.

“It’s a mixture of pride in knowing what you are doing and knowing your subject matter intimately and how that reflects in the art work. And being fully aware and happy with your ability to do what you are doing. That’s why I specialize in bugs and fish and things, because that’s what I know the most about.”
Marty has illustrated several books on reptiles and fish --- and for him, their beauty is more than skin deep.
“You can see from the art work how beautiful these animals are and I have an appreciation of how beautiful these things are, it makes it easier for people to appreciate the beauty of those creatures.”
This sensitive low-key artist knows who he is and what he wants out of life. What he wants, is the rest of us to enjoy the world he draws…nature at it’s most beautiful.
