Bill Jackson
Hatteberg's People
Reporter: Larry Hatteberg
| August 28, 2006--We appreciate their work, but we take them for granted. I'm talking about people we see
almost every week. It seems like they will always be there. People like Bill Jackson in Mulvane. Now he's
the guy who runs Bill's Service Station. He's making noise like he wants to retire but not quite yet. |
 |
"I just enjoy pleasing the people. Sometimes I get awful tired of pleasing them, but I enjoy it most of the
time."
Bill Jackson’s Mulvane Service Station is a good place to watch the world go by.
"I look more natural setting right here." |
 |
Here, kids know they can air up their bike tires anytime they want.
Since the early ‘70’s Bill has been at this location, fixing your tires....."Lost the hole", and enjoying the moment.
"Yeah, we've had some good days here." |
But times change and folks get older…and a few weeks ago, Bill thought it might be time for him to retire.
"Well, I'm 77 years old and the tires I've been fixing are too heavy for the old man."
"They asked me they said...what kind of nail is that? I said that looks like a 12 dollar and 50 cent nail to me because that's what I get for fixing tires."
He’s made a town full of friends over the years….and everybody knows him.
"Hey, come over here. Smile, show me some teeth."
|
But now it appears, despite talk of retirement, he said things have changed, and he may stick around for awhile.
"Well, I must like it pretty good, I've been at it all these years."
(Friend) "If you want to know something about Mulvane, this is the place to come and find out where it is at." |

Inside, his collection of John Wayne posters depict a man who never quit either.
"Well, he was one of my favorite actors, I kind of grew up with him on the screen."
But no matter what his future, he’ll certainly have more time for family---- |
"OK, we've got her. Do you think she looks like me Tanner?"
Well, no matter who she looks like, Bill Jackson is a member of a generation who is just not ready to give it
up quite yet.
"A lot of good people." |
 |
"If you can blank him out."
(laugh)
Bill Jackson --- at this point…he just can’t give it up. |
