Myron Schmidt
Hatteberg's People
Reporter: Larry Hatteberg

June 15, 2003--When Myron Schmidt goes golfing with his dog Penny, he does it on his own nine-hole golf course, a course he designed and built. What started out as farmland is now the Pine Edge Golf Course near Goessel. Myron Schmidt
"I believe that God created this earth and he created us to show off his beauty."

About a mile and half East of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church off K-15 highway, is Myron Schmidt's field of greens.

Myron Schmidt's dog, Penny. I love to play on it."

It's a complete nine-hole golf course that is attracting many area golfers. A few years ago he sold his dairy that can be seen in the background of green number three. It took him seven years to carve the course out of a wheat field. Even now he farms the wheat that surrounds the course."

"Well, this is where my ball landed when I hit it." Schmidt laughs as he stands in the middle of a large sand trap.
Even for him the course is a tough one. On the nine holes there are six par 3's and 3 par 4's.

In addition to the toughness of the course folks also discuss its beauty. On his 126 yard par 3, that used to be the place the wheat washed out...so he built a lake.

"When I decided to build a golf course, I decided I wanted to build one that was challenging and make the golfer's think."

"I wanted it to be fun, because I think most golfers today should have fun playing golf."

And they do! On number six, it's a dogleg 180-yard par four. Again, beauty is everywhere and that's by design. Myron loves landscaping and he and his wife are good at it.

"It's a lot of fun to live out in the rural area."

Schmitt's house is surrounded by the golf course...he used to have wheat dust coming in the window...now it's the occasional golf ball. For Myron Schmidt, a life's goal has now been met.

"It has happened and it's wonderful."
