July 23, 2006--Life always gives us different paths and in Marion, Kansas Daryl Enos makes custom furniture; at least that's how he started out, now he and his wife Patricia are becoming known for his specialized talents. Talents that make his woodworking unique and we begin in his rural workshop looking for the old dog. |
"Sammy, Sammy. Come here Sam."
Here in the country with the critters..
"I don't know where she's at, she's out running around I guess."
Daryl and Pat Enos of Marion create a place of peace that we all one day could need. His workshop is large - his goals simple. |
"I think if people had a preference they'd choose wood, it just seems to be more of a natural material and not as cold."
Although the work is hidden in the shadow of our existence---
"In fact when people ask what I do you get all kinds of mixed reactions, some go ‘oow’ some go ‘oh’." "It's just not an everyday subject." |
 |
Nor is it anything Daryl and his wife Pat ever thought they would build. It wasn’t until the death of Pat's mother that led them to look for alternative burial methods and since Daryl had 24 years woodworking experience- building caskets seemed a sensible step. |

|
"The only time it really felt strange was when Daryl needed to know what was happening on the inside and he asked me to lay down."
That experience wasn't the only shocker.
"I didn't know it was going to be this hard. The morticians can either
raise or lower the springs to make the viewing more pleasant." |
After the caskets are complete- what do you do with them- seeking clients isn't simple.
"When you advertise you can't exactly - buy one get one free - you know, you can't be gimmick oriented in this."
So they sell their product the old fashion way.
"We are trying to do the very best we can do every time we put a stick of wood together."
And they do it as a team. |
"I'm in here sewing and Daryl's in the other room.. when he takes a break he comes in here and we both get a break and that's nice."
"That's good"
"Daryl and I have always worked as a team in most everything." |
 |
"I wonder where Sammy's at"
"She was here earlier."
