Cina King
Hatteberg's People
Reporter: Larry Hatteberg
May 18, 2003--On Hatteberg's People in Southern Butler County, Cina King is enjoying the essence of spring. She and her friends created a homemade park. It is on her property near her home in Latham, Kansas.

"My mystical serenity garden is what I call it."
Cina King has plenty of friends. Neighbors, her husband, children and a host of others built her a homemade park |

"Just a peaceful place."
Cina injured her neck in a work related accident. Her recuperation has taken time and she faces even more surgeries, but she said she just couldn't stay inside all the time. |
"If you sit all the time you get stiff. If I can at least have somewhere where I can walk and a little trail where I can sit down once in a while, that's what they've built it for. Just a little this and that and people can come enjoy it."
| The park is as large as a small city block. It has paths, nature walks, home-made tables and chairs and more birds than you can imagine. |
| "I had Mike, a friend of mine, he came through with a chain saw and cut down some trees and made a path. The guys, my husband, and neighbor Blair have built benches and chairs. My favorite thing is to sit and watch the birds." |
Even her many cats have their own hand-painted place in the park. A place where Cina can recuperate, relax and enjoy nature.
"It's quiet. You might here a few cattle trucks, but it's fun just watching the cats. I have a lot of cats playing around here. I just like the scenery. They've made it beautiful for me."

The land used to be just thick brush and timber. Located behind her home it is now paved with hard work and sweat.
"This is where I come and sit because I have a good view of everything. I have a good view from here of each area."
"Over here the kids came come and play. They have a little tent, a little table, a swing set, cooler, and a charcoal grill."
A simple private park in a small town, in many ways a symbol of friends helping friends.
"It's all right, just a small town out of the way. It's a good place to live." |
