Ed Dreher
Hatteberg's People
Reporter: Larry Hatteberg
April 27, 2003--On the Kansas prairie, ingenious folks of all kinds change the landscape to fit their view of life. Ed Dreher who lives south of Halstead in Harvey County is one of those creative types, who instead of seeing an old silo, saw a memory.
The silo stands in a field of green, his log cabin home nearby.
"It's just an old concrete silo built of blocks, and it's been used as a silo for years. But today, it's not a silo any more. It's a big tall playhouse for my kids and grandkids."

Ed Dreher is a craftsman, and with this old silo, he turned his skills not only to the silo's renovation, but also to the crafting of something even more important.
Memories
"I wanted to build a memory, I wanted to build something that would be here a long time after I'm gone." |
Inside, a circular staircase winds towards the top where any child would be happy to spend a lazy afternoon.
"I wanted to build it for my kids, so they could see it, play it, and know that this is a memory of Papa Ed as they call me. I just wanted to build a memory, that was the main thing."
It's quiet with just the sound of the wind and the chirping of the birds.
"I like the country, I like to sometimes look out and watch the birds and listen to the quiet."
The view on this foggy rainy day held no sunrise or sunset, just the green fields, accented by adjacent farm building --- but there is a peace.
"You get these crazy ideas in your life and the Lord allowed me to do these kinds of things and I enjoyed the building. Maybe I can touch somebody with it. It's just one of those fun things in life that we can do and then again, make a memory."
"Yes, it took us about three years to get it to the way it is today."
Silos of silence, silos of memories, Ed Dreher dreams with his hands and creates new life from towering relics. From yesteryear to tomorrow, it is one man's room with a view.
"It's going to be here long after I'm gone, my kids will enjoy it, my grandkids will enjoy it...and they'll remember that their grandfather had that crazy idea, he did it and it's here." |
