May 28, 2006==Winfield native Barry Patton lives two lives. One is his business; the other is his music and his most unusual instruments.
Barry Patton is a diesel mechanic. He owns a Winfield Diesel Repair Company.
The trucks he repairs are big. The work is dirty. He loves it. |
But while this is business.....
This is his passion.
Barry is a 'bones' player.
“That’s the reason they call them ‘bones’. They are made out of the real cow ribs, the bone of the rib.” |
Barry’s garage looks pretty typical…..trucks worn with thousands of miles sitting like patients in a doctors waiting room.
“You have your instruments over here and then you have your patient.” |
 |
But these titans of the road aren’t the only ones with lots of miles on them. In addition to his mechanical abilities, Barry is one of the best ‘bones’ players ever…maybe THE best. These bones between his fingers takes him all over the world, as far away as China…he also plays and has made video’s with the
Byron Berline Band.

“It’s in your blood.”
But wherever he’s at…his ‘bones’ are not far away…
“Don’t ask me why I picked up the bones or what possessed me to play them at age 13. Other than people saying that keep playing them because it is really a lost art.” |
“Some people obviously enjoy it and I really do, because it makes you feel really good that you are doing it.”
“There you have it.”
Barry also made a guest appearance as a band member on HBO’s hit series ‘Deadwood’. For more information, Barry can be reached at 620-221-0660. |
