Reporter: Larry Hatteberg
March 26, 2006--Milan Harkness, known as ‘Scotchie’ to his friends farms near Herrington. His relationship with the community goes back two generations. First though, the cattle are hungry.
“I do enjoy life.”
“This is what keeps me going.” |
 |
When Milan Harkness is rolling that hay out for hungry cattle…he’s not really working.
“That’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. To do my farming, take care of my cattle.”
Milan was raised to ‘do the right thing’ in life. To help the community…and to work hard.
“This is what keeps me going.”
Right now his calves get his full attention. And he loves them. |
 |
“As much as you can enjoy anything. Those calves now, you’ve got to take care of those calves.”
Milan and his family have been taking care of things for a long time in this little farming community --- Things like the Develan cemetery.
|
“Dad came in 1875 and the cemetery started in 1890.”
His father Arch Harkness was the original caretaker back in the late 1800’s. That’s Arch and Milan nearly eight decades ago.
|
“The community got together and worked on things together and dad, well he was that kind of a person. He just like to help other people out.”
So two generations of the Harkness family have now tended this little cemetery. They don’t see any big deal about it. For them, its just part of what a citizen is supposed to do. Help the community. |
 |
“I just think its one of those things that has to be done and I enjoy doing it.”
It’s a well-maintained little cemetery – and facts like how many are buried here….well, that just isn’t important.
“Now you are asking kind of a sensible question, you know, I never thought about that.
|
And that’s because folks like Milan are too busy making things better to worry about the small stuff that reporters ask.
“I would like to go through life again. Why would I, because I enjoyed it so much. And I’m telling the truth. (laugh). |
