Jason Karber
Hatteberg's People
Reporter: Larry Hatteberg
| March 2, 2003 - They live on top of the world. Ok, well maybe just on top of Kansas. Jason Karber is one of the few Kansas citizens who live in the tallest residences in the state. |
Downtown on top of the old Holiday Inn that now contains residential living. Now known as 250 Douglas Place, many of the upper floors have been renovated into apartments.
"To me it just looks like a bunch of Christmas lights. It probably looks a lot more serene than it really is."

When 28-year-old Jason Karber arrives home from his job at Koch Industries, his apartment view is a little different than most. In his two west-facing rooms, he has a wonderful 21-story view of the sunsets. He says he can see about 13 miles. |
| "You can see a long way. The windows are like artwork in a sense. There is always something different out those windows." |
Jason has a small telescope that permits him to see planes landing at Mid-Continent Airport or baseball games at Lawrence Dumont Stadium. 21 floors above Wichita, Jason and his neighbors have the tallest residences in the state and the best views. |
"It is neat. I moved here from Joplin, Missouri and the tallest building in that town is about thirteen stories and I always thought that if I was going to move to a more metropolitan kind of area that I would try to live in a little different way that Joplin couldn't offer and that's what I did."
For Jason, it's a great bachelor pad, but, as some have asked him, is it a chick magnet?
"Some girls don't get impressed with anything you do and some girls are impressed with everything you do, so I think it depends on the girls."
There are many different floor plans, his has two main rooms, plus bath and storage, other available floor plans include a two-story loft. There are a total of 135 apartments available. Jason likes his efficient kitchen... |
"Anything I eat that's really good I go out to buy so this works just fine for me."
Plus, he has an ample bedroom that doubles as the computer area, and again, the view is incredible. But since 9/11 has he ever worried tall buildings.
"We are in the middle of the United States so we are buffered a little bit. And I don't want anybody to run my life but myself and my faith, so I'm not going to let someone else dictate how I live."
The view at night is like an artists pallet of color...sparkling and ever changing. Everywhere you look what looks 'usual' from the ground becomes 'unusual' at this height. Almost a night gallery of color through the windows, moving, sparkling, and ever changing.
"Living the high life Right? Sure!" I like it, I wouldn't trade it. Not now anyway."
Do Kansas tornadoes spook him at all because he lives so high. Not really, Jason says he'd love to see one, just as long as it doesn't get too close.
I think I would miss it (the view) if I didn't have it now."
