Michael Hathaway
Hatteberg's People
Reporter: Larry Hatteberg
 |
February 16, 2003-Michael Hathaway is
a man whose voice is in his writing.
That's why over 20 years ago he founded the Chiron Review.
It's a magazine devoted to cutting edge poetry and short stories
all contributed by the magazine's subscribers and by Michael. |
|
"Well, I'd describe myself as
quiet and shy, hardworking and compassionate."
Michael Hathaway lives two lives. In the first, he is the curator of the Stafford County Museum
in Stafford, Kansas.
"I just have to be busy.
I enjoy being busy and I like to be busy doing something I have to
show for."
The museum is well kept and unusually
large for a small town. Hathaway
knows where everything is and understands the historical importance of
each item.
|
|
His second life is where his heart is,
writing and producing a literary magazine for the masses.
With the Chiron Review, Michael publishes quarterly and says his
magazine is a voice for the masses. In
St. John, where he lives, he publishes the magazine out of his home,
surrounded by a mass of ever-present and loving cats. |
 |
|
"I've got about 12 or so."
About them he has written: "These
cats are profound gifts. They are a rich smorgasbord of color, shape, size
and personality. Each is a one-of-a-kind piece of the universe.
I am blessed that their lives have intersected with mine."
|
 |
|
Every day he finds the mailbox to be full of wonderful manuscripts from
his readers.
"Yes, the mail is very important.
That's where everything happens...is in the mail"
|
|
|
"The first issue I sent out 20 copies.
I never expected it to grow larger than that, it kind of
snowballed. Circulation is
about a thousand and it goes to all 50 states and a few foreign
countries."
"There
are a lot of people who just don't understand what it is about. And the sad thing is they don't try to understand.
The magazine to me is a magazine that is reclaiming poetry for the
so-called 'common' people, but yet I can't seem to get a lot of
those people interested.
|
| It is in Michel's hands that the
Chiron Literary Review comes to life.
About the magazine, one critic wrote: "The writing is gritty and
real. The magazine has a vitality sometimes lacking in far more
established reviews."
|
 |
 |
He had thought about moving to
Connecticut to work in a homeless shelter for animals.
But his subscribers convinced him to stay in St. John...near the
land he was born.
"It feels good.
It feels comfortable. It
feels like home." |
