Hatteberg's People

November 12, 2005--On Hatteberg’s People, I’m stretching a bit this week. It’s actually Hatteberg’s People and a dog. The dog’s name is Harley, and these are the people who own her. Richard and Sonia Raney of Scandia, Kansas. The people own a hardware store. The dog thinks she does too.

Folks seldom come in to see Richard and Sonia. They come to see Harley!
"Get the duct tape!”
Harley works in a Hardware store.
Harley does a great job until the pesky media follows him….
Then she does just what some politicians do…..
She growls, she snarls…she threatens…..and then she runs…
But then she sees she can’t hide…so she attacks our furry microphone…

But, unlike politicians, Harley always completes her job.
Because Harley always gets a treat.
Scandia, Kansas in Republic County, founded in 1868 by a group of Swedes….It’s the little town of 421, plus Harley and this is where she works. |
At Richard and Sony Raney’s Hardware store in Downtown Scandia
“Yup, there she is.”
Harly has been greeting folks for four years at this little hardware store. This 65 pound, 22 inch tall yellow lab is an employee. She even has her own executive chair.
“Harley, get me the WD-40.” |

But it’s how she works that people love to watch.
“She gets more press and notoriety than we ever get.”
“Once she started doing these tricks, our kids got real tired of us talking about the dog.”
“Harley, get the shims.” |

“They think we’ve kind of gone overboard a little bit.”
“She really does understand so much of our lives and what we do.”
“Give me a pop.” |
“People come in just to see her and if she happens not to be in the store at the time, they say Where’s Harley?”
“What’s really fun is when someone hasn’t heard about her and wants duct tape or something like that.”
“Go get the duct tape!”

“And we’ve had a lot of comments on that…. ‘Really’ or ‘no way’. One guy, she was coming back with the duct tape, said, well I’ll be darned.”
“Ever since we’ve had her people just love her. She lots of fun and people come in just to see her.”
“What do you see out there? Come here.” |
Harley sometimes sleeps between customers….and nobody seems to mind.

| Scandia, Kansas is located about two and a half hours north of Wichita in Republic County. Raney’s Hardware store is right downtown. |
