September 11, 2005--It’s not many of us who know in high school what we want to do with our life. 18-year-old Nick Hoskinson of Haven does ---
He's a young man whose work ethic was developed at an early age and whose future, he believes is hatching results. |
 |
“This is every hunters dream when they all ‘covey up’ and get going.”
“I think I have it pretty good. I have a good family and have a good job that supports whatever I want to do.
And this is what he wants to do. Raise Quail. On the fringe of Haven, KS Nick Hoskinson is in the mainstream of his life. That’s because these birds are his life. |
 |
“My goal was 10,000 my senior year and this is my senior year and I reached my goal. I hatched 10,000 this year. Hunters’ like to hunt them and so do I. I don’t really get too attached to them because I raise so many. |
The Covey Rise Quail Farm is Nick’s operation. At eighteen, he’s already been the entrepreneur of this little venture for four years.
|
| “This is the flight pen to help them get stronger and to get ‘flying’ quality. It’s a 150 foot long. When they get out in the field, it makes them a little harder bird to hit and they flush a little easier. |
 |
| You have to like the job to do a good job and I think me raising the quail and being able to go hunting whenever I want….because I am my own boss….it just makes it a lot easier on you when you like what you’re doing. And I like raising quail.” |
 |
“Work you have to do it. You have to work all your life and I want to start a little earlier than other kids.”
And we’re talking serious work – at his home above the garage the hatchlings, not yet ready to be placed in the pen. |
“You have to clean it out so well they catch diseases so easy you just have to watch them 24 hours a day.
In Haven, Nick Hoskinson may only be a high school senior. But he looks at his life through the fence ---
“Yep, this is what I like to do.” He sees his future looking back at him.
“It keeps me outside…I don’t want to be stuck in a factory really.”
|
| In the future Nick hopes to have his own land and raise not only quail but also pheasant. He wants it to be a game preserve of his own to bring in hunters and he will be their guide. |
