Doyle Dyer
Hatteberg's People
Reporter: Larry Hatteberg
| November 24, 2002--Small
town police work is sometimes more than just being a policeman.
Doyle Dyer of the Goddard Police Department is a good example.
He's involved in the community and you never know what he might be
doing. |
 |
|
"Been in law enforcement since
1967. Been here in Goddard
since 1985."
When you
see Goddard Police Chief Doyle Dyer driving his very hip P.T. Cruiser
down the highway—he's either on a police call, or something needs
fixing.
"The biggest charge I get is being able to help the
citizens."
So, if you think this police chief just sits in his office shuffling
paper...you would be wrong. |

|
"I got to where I was wanting to
improve the town, so I built the picnic tables, plus I built the
shelters for the tables."
And this is only the beginning of a long list----over by the school, he
had this drainage ditch graded and cleaned so water wouldn't back up. |
|
He was afraid cars might go
over this culvert so he had a wall put up.
But he is proudest of this little building that was built with all
donated supplies. Inside,
bicycles for kids—that he has repaired so the city can give
them away to needy children.
|
|
"I'm a man of few words, but it makes me feel pretty good."
This man of few words is well-liked
by city staff—but there are more surprises.
In the Goddard court clerk's office—you'll notice a
painting—the artist? Chief Dyer!
|
|
|
In the chief's office comedian Red
Skelton's likeness almost overshadows the quiet spoken chief.
"A lot of people come in and see my name on this painting and they
can't believe I did the painting."
|
|
He did that and more.
When Chief Dyer sees junk just lying around, he makes sure it's
taken to the dump.
And as he scoots around town,
you'll even see him picking up trash along the side of the road.
"Its just part of my job." |
 |
|
He's a different sort of a
cop—and perhaps the tape he usually listens to in his car—echoes his
life.
"I did it my way."
