January 22, 2005--Paul Jaecke is one of those guys who is just happy doing ‘whatever’, ‘whenever’ he wants. He lives near Chapman, Kansas and that’s not far from Abilene. He lives a quiet existence and that’s just the way he likes it. |
“I think we moved back here in the Spring of ’38, and I’ve been here ever since.”
Paul Jaecke lives far from the paved roads, a man not to be found if he so desires.
“People ask why did we move back here, you might say…in the sticks? I say, well, they went where they could find water.”
They found that and more, his big ol’ house now full of stuff he collects.
“Well, I think it is worthwhile.”
He loves collecting pens and pencils…..the collection upstairs is his constant friend.
|
|
“I feel like I’ve accomplished something.”
More than 3,000 pencils, an untold number of pens in a room small in size but large in interest. He has pens and pencils from all over.
“I’ve got them from Missouri, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas and Colorado.”
|
His bedroom nearby, simple, adequate…..and filled with his ‘hat’ collection.
“If I need one, I know where I can find one.”
Outside, even the cockleburs were hoping for shelter, as the north wind put change in the air.
“Evenings when I sit here and am watching television, I do crossword puzzles.
But there is not much change with Paul. He’s been solo all his life, a bachelor if you will.
|
“I do what I want to. I don’t have to be hollered at.”
Living alone since his Mother and brother died years ago….and the ‘alone’ part is ok with him.
“I’ve been alone so long, I wouldn’t know how to act if there was anyone else would come.” |
|
 |
So, Out here, down the old rutted lane, Paul Jaecke lives just fine thank you…..
“I’m going to stay here as long as I can.”
In a big house, where the wind blows free…so is Paul.
“I’m happy.” |
Even though Paul has 3000 pens and pencils, he doesn’t carry any with him. He says he doesn’t like to have anything in his pockets.
