Couple Survives Twisters in Topeka and Greensburg

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- Ed and Jean Shuck have been married 48 years
and raised three children. And they've survived two of the worst tornadoes to hit Kansas over the past four decades.

The couple, both 67, were living in central Topeka on June 8th, 1966, when a twister roared through the area and heavily damaged their home. The storm killed 16 people and leveled 800 homes.

After living in Topeka and Omaha, Nebraska, the couple retired three years ago to the area in which they'd grown up -- and moved to Greensburg.

Their home and more than 90 percent of the south-central Kansas
town of 1,400 was destroyed by a May 4th twister.

The Greensburg storm was an E-F5 tornado, packing winds of up to 205 miles per hour. The tornado killed ten people. The Topeka storm was as powerful.
