Highway 54 Stays Closed Thru Greensburg

GREENSBURG RECOVERY UPDATE

U.S. 54 will remain closed to the public at least through Memorial Day due to safety concerns. Fuel is now available to the public in Greensburg at the Volz fuel station on the east end of town on U.S. 54. The public is limited to 20 gallons per fill up of unleaded fuel and 100 gallons of diesel.

Debris Removal

Dump truck loads of debris continue to be taken to the Kiowa County landfill. To date, 13,114 loads have been hauled there. However, the landfill will be closed this weekend.

Debris is being picked up from right of ways. Residents are asked to keep debris at least three feet from utility poles, fire hydrants or gas meters. Call Greensburg City Hall with debris removal questions at 620-723-2751. The United Way offers debris removal help. Call 211.

Kiowa County and Greensburg City Offices

Kiowa County Offices are located at the Mullinville High School. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Kiowa county commission meets every Monday at 10:00 a.m. at the Mullinville High School. Greensburg City Offices are located in trailers southeast of the County Courthouse. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Greensburg city commission meets every Monday at 5 p.m. at City Hall.

Hospital Services

The Kansas National Guard’s Expeditionary Medical Support System (EMEDS) is operational the west end of U.S. 54 across from the John Deere dealer. This replaces the Kiowa County Hospital and provides similar services as the hospital provided (critical access care). Patients needing additional care will be transported to Pratt or Dodge City. The EMEDS will be operated by the local hospital staff and administrative procedures regarding billing and insurance will be the same as when the hospital was operating.

FEMA Assistance

Anyone who has not registered for FEMA assistance should call 1-800-621-FEMA or go online to www.fema.gov, or apply in person at the FEMA trailer by the Kiowa County Courthouse in Greensburg. Edwards, Pratt and Stafford county residents may apply in person at the Disaster Recovery Center in Haviland.

Residents, and those who worked in Greensburg and have lost their jobs, are being considered for recovery positions. Call 770-216-3156 or 417-234-3798 for more information or visit the Disaster Recovery Center at Barclay College.

Restoration of Services

Water service is resuming in some areas. Water has been turned on and testing of lines is occurring north of Florida Street. Residents should not drink the water until testing has concluded. Electric power is being restored to portions of town.

Picnic in the Park Event

A picnic in the park will be held for Greensburg residents is Thursday, May 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Davis Park.
