A Wichita man about to be sentenced for theft Tuesday shocks everyone when he's accused of stealing "candy" while at the Sedgwick County Courthouse.
The snack bar where candy, soft drinks and coffee is sold is a busy place around midday.
It really turned nuts when sheriff's deputies say someone tried to steal some candy.
People in the snack bar saw what was happening and alerted courthouse security just a few feet away.
That's when 53-year old Kevin Dewayne Crowder was arrested for theft.
Deputies say Crowder, who has a criminal history dating back to 1993, had $5.00 worth of candy in his pocket he didn't pay for.
But there's more to the story. Crowder was in the courthouse for sentencing on a previous theft case. Sheriff Lt. Dave Mattingly is puzzled.
"I can't offer an explanation for what was going through his mind", Mattingly said.
Mattingly said, "This one does make you scratch your head. It's kind of surprising. Unfortunately that's what we have to deal with sometimes."
Crowder was booked into the jail on theft after being sentenced for the earlier theft.
The accused thief will have to go to court and could face significant jail time for something as inexpensive as $5.00 worth of candy.
