LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Two people have been charged with attempted first-degree murder after a motorist was shot on a highway near Lawrence.
Twenty-two-year-old Brittany Nicole Smith of Eudora and 25-year-old Edward Joseph Parker of Lawrence were charged Wednesday. Parker's bond was set at $150,000 and Smith's was set for $75,000.
Douglas County authorities say 24-year-old Skylar Workman of Lawrence was shot May 26 as he drove on Highway 59 south of Lawrence. He is still recovering at a Topeka hospital.
The motive for the shooting has never been publicized but authorities say it was not a random act of violence.
The Lawrence Journal-World reports the suspects' next court appearances are scheduled for June 10. It was not immediately clear if they had attorneys.
Two arrests have been made in connection to a shooting on a Kansas highway that left a man injured.
The shooting happened Monday, May 24 on 59 Highway South of Lawrence. Skylar L. Workman, 24, of Lawrence was shot while driving in the area. He was flown by air ambulance to Topeka where he is recuperating.
Police later said they didn't believe the shooting was random.
Last night, Douglas County sheriff's detectives arrested the first suspect in connection to the shooting. Edward Joseph "E.J." Parker was arrested and booked on the charge of attempted second degree murder. That charge has since been modified to attempted first degree murder and conspiracy to commit first degree murder.
A second suspect was later identified as 20-year-old Brittany Nicole Smith of Eudora. She has also been arrested, facing charges of attempted first degree murder and conspiracy to commit first degree murder.
Their first court appearances could be as early as Wednesday.
Other details in the case have not yet been released.
Lawrence Police have shut down a three mile section of the southbound lanes of 59 Highway, following a shooting late Monday night.
It happened around 11 p.m. near N 1000 Road. Police responded to the area on the report of a 24-year-old man who had been shot. He was airlifted to Stormont Vail hospital in Topeka, where he is now recovering.
So far, no arrests have been made. No other details have been released.
