Police say they are seeing an alarming spike in motorcycle thefts in Wichita. Experts say there are some precautions you can take to keep from becoming a victim.

Since the first of the year, Wichita police say they've taken 53 reports of stolen motorcycles. The thefts escalated in June when police saw 18 thefts just that month.

Ross Reed owns Mid America Power Sports. He hears about stolen motorcycles from customers all the time, but even he was surprised by the number of recent thefts.

"To see those numbers for June... that's a large number," said Reed. "That's disheartening, especially when it's your toy because that's what a motorcycle what it is. It's your pride and joy. A lot of people customize them and they have a lot of heart and soul in those things."

Reed says the thieves aren't stealing motorcycles to ride around. Instead, they are taking them and breaking them down for the parts.

There are steps you can take to protect your bike. Reed says you should always use the steering lock. For extra protection, he recommends buying an extra lock. You can pick one up for about $30.

Motorcycle owners are also warned not to draw attention to their bikes. Police say you shouldn't wash your motorcycle out in plain site in your driveway. They say that's one way these criminals are spotting their targets.
