The Cowley County Sheriff is investigating a case of cattle rustling.

Seventeen cattle were discovered missing Tuesday morning from a pasture in the 32000 block of 181st Road, according to a sheriff's office incident report.

The sheriff's office will occasionally get a report of a calf or two being stolen, but it is very unusual for somebody to take 17 cattle, a deputy said.

Investigators believe sometime before 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, somebody with a dual-wheeled pickup, a trailer and at least one horse rounded up the 17 cattle. Most are completely black, the sheriff said, but some are black with white faces. All were branded with a T on top of an O.

The sheriff's office estimates the herd was worth $17,000.

Anybody with information is asked to call Cowley County Crimestoppers at 620-221-7777 or 620-442-7777.
