Wichita police say alert citizens called 911 during the middle of the night, to stop an air conditioning theft from a church.

Police were called to Celebration Baptist Church on East Ninth Street around 2:15 a.m. They found three criminals. A lookout was arrested at the scene. A second person was captured after a foot chase, while a third ran away.

Air conditioning theft has become a common crime in many cities, as criminals seek to make money from the copper wire inside.

"Well in the Patrol East Bureau we've had approximately 39 AC thefts based on this latest trend," said Wichita Police Captain Hassan Ramzah. "So something like that definitely alerts our attention and we want to get that information out."

Police say to keep a close eye on your unit, and call police if you see anything suspicious.
