WICHITA, KAN. --- Staff members at Cafe Moderne in Old Town are shaken up after a burglar shattered the front window of the restaurant, and took all of the money inside.
"On Monday morning earlier when I come, I kinda shocked, scared, what's going on. Is this the wrong door? I kinda back up. No, this is my door," recalled owner Eva Ko.
Her surveillance cameras captured the whole incident, including when the burglar smashed a cash register onto the floor.
"We had police come down here, taking some information. So I hope soon, they can find out what's going on, taking care of here because Old Town, a lot of people come down here, walk around, relax and watch a movie," Ko said.
Across the street, Pure Salon was also targeted by thieves. Its front door was shattered and a computer was missing Wednesday morning.
"Talking with police this week, it seems this was an isolated event with only one or a few individuals that were out to just be reckless," said Jason Van Sickle, the president of the Old Town Association.
Van Sickle wants to reassure people in the area, there's no cause for alarm. He says overall numbers show Old Town is actually getting safer. An ordinance passed in May that increased fines for illegal activity has helped cracked down on crime. Plus, he says, association members are meeting with police next week to discuss beefing up security.
"We're going to also be looking at adding cameras and lights to make the area safe," Van Sickle said.
Meanwhile, Wichita police is still investigating the two incidents. There is no word yet on any suspects.
