About 10:30 p.m. on Friday, July 5, Lloyd D. Fergueson and a six-year-old boy were riding his horse near the intersection of East 21st Street and Piatt. As they were trying to cross 21st Street a car struck them and then drove away. Mr. Fergueson died at the scene; the boy was hospitalized. The horse had to be euthanized because of its injuries.
Witnesses told officers that the car fled north on Piatt and disappeared. Based on the debris left behind, it was identified as a 2003-05 silver or gray Mercury Marquis. Officers say the car has extensive front-end damage, and that the horse may have rolled over the top of the car following the impact.
