Steve Norton was gunned down in June of 1994 as he left his business in South Wichita. Police say this crime was cold and very calculated
Norton was 23 years-old at the time of the crime. He was shot outside his business called Ultimate Fitness at 2011 S. Washington around 4:30 in the morning on 6/16/1994.
Police say Norton was walking to his girlfriend's car. She was waiting for him as he left his business that early morning. Suddenly, a shot rang out from the east across the street from a high-powered rifle.
"Witnesses in the area observed a white male who was approximately six feet tall running northbound through the alley," says Lieutenant Ken Landwehr. "He was carrying a long gun, wearing a blue long sleeved shirt and long pants."
Nobody actually saw the man fire the shot, but they did see him running down the alley. But why did this crime have to happen? Landwehr says he has an idea.
"He had some arguments in the past. Domestic arguments as well as other arguments in reference to his business, but we do not know if those are related to the shooting."
It appeared whoever did this was waiting for Norton to leave. They obviously knew he'd be there at 4:30 in the morning.
"I'm convinced that someone knows who the shooter is or who possibly had the shooter do this if it was not the actual person that did it," Landwehr says. "I'm not putting out the possibility that this was a paid for hit or a requested hit because of the way the homicide occurred."
The case has been cold for quite some time, sop police are hoping that maybe somebody heard something in passing over the years and will pass that information on to police.
