Crimestoppers Murder Mystery - Rufus Draper III

Stay up-to-date with KAKE News:

It's been a decade since 16 year-old Rufus Draper III was gunned down on a Wichita golf course. The killer has never been identified, but police are hoping that, with the passage of time, someone will come forward with clues to help solve the case.

Draper lived in North Wichita. He often spent his evenings at a friend's house. When it was time to walk home, he sometimes cut across MacDonald Golf Course near 13th and Roosevelt.

On August 9th, 1998, Wichita Police Detective Tim Relph says somebody had their eye on the boy.

"He was intentionally targeted for this crime," says Relph. "It's unusual that someone would be waiting for him on the golf course, or waiting to do him harm in the middle of the course at 10:30 at night."

The evidence indicates Draper was chased from the golf course onto 13th Street. Even though he'd been shot, he was able to make it across a chain link fence and onto 13th Street. He collapsed and died in the middle of the street.

Even after all this time, Relph says police have held some information back in hopes that someone will come forward with information that nobody else knows.

"One of those theories or some of that talk is going to have some basis in truth," explains Relph. He says someone out there knows who shot this 16 year-old boy.

"There are a lot of young men at a certain age that get caught up in things, but they mature," Relph says. Thankfully, the vast majority of them don't go into crime, but unfortunately, they may have seen or heard something back then that can help us tremendously."
