Thieves Steal From $500,000 Model Home

Monday, October 1, 2012

Homes in some upscale Wichita neighborhoods are being targeted by burglars.

Police are looking for thieves who hit a $500,000 model home in the 2500 block of North Bayside over the weekend.

Robin, who doesn't want her last name used, was the first to notice something wasn't right at the model home in her upscale northwest Wichita neighborhood early Sunday morning.

"I peeked in and noticed some vases and a rug gone, chests and decorations," she said. "When the computer was all over the ground I was like, OK, I'm not going in any further."

Inside the home, burglars had taken their pick. They stole a calf skin rug, several pieces of expensive decor and the realtor's computer. The loss is estimated at $1,500.

The developer told KAKE News there have been break-ins at homes that are still under construction and cars in the neighborhood. He says it's happening at high end sub-divisions across town.

Robin and others are a little more on edge, hoping to get the thieves caught.

"I was a little scared to go to bed," said Robin. "I make sure doors are locked and look outside. It just makes you more cautious."

The neighborhood watch program has alerted neighbors to be on the lookout for anything suspicious. Police say there are break-ins at homes under construction all over the city. Thieves are looking for tools.
