Wichita police arrest a 16-year-old boy in connection to a weekend homicide that killed another teenager.
It happened in the 3300 block of south Broadway just before 10 p.m. Saturday. Police said four juveniles were at a home, when a 16-year-old boy took out a gun to show it to a 17-year-old girl.
The suspect confronted his 14-year-old brother and another 16-year-old male, and pulled the trigger. A bullet hit the 16-year-old in the chest. Investigators said the boy did not believe the gun was loaded.
"I believe that he thought the gun was unloaded," said Lt. Ken Landwehr, Wichita police department. "There were live cartridges on the bed where he was showing the gun to the girl. But unfortunately there were only five cartridges on the bed and the gun holds six rounds."
The victim was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis where he later died.
Police arrested the 16-year-old boy and booked him into juvenile detention facility on second degree murder charges.
Authorities said the weapon was stolen.
"The investigation showed that the parents were out for the evening," Landwehr said.
Alcohol and marijuana use may have played a role in the deadly shooting, officials said.
The victim's name has not been released.
